CBD oil or cannabidiol is a chemical compound derived from the cannabis plant and has relied on different methods of extraction over time. Most recently, the CO2 extraction method has become the most reliable method for extracting high quality full spectrum CBD oil.
The cannabis plant, which has been consumed for its medicinal, spiritual and recreational properties for thousands of years, contains 104 chemical compounds. CBD is one of these but, unlike its not so distant relative THC, CBD is completely legal.
To fully understand what CBD oil is, it is important to disassociate it from the contentious marijuana plant which has been surrounded by negative stigma since it was made illegal in the UK in 1928 and banned from being prescribed medicinally in 1971.
What makes consuming CBD oil different from the cannabis plant is that it contains little to no traces of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol).
THC is the natural psychoactive compound that may alter a person’s state of mind, consciousness, mood and perception. Otherwise known for making a person feel high.
So, unlike the cannabis plant, CBD is legal and doesn’t have any psychoactive properties.
CBD producers select a hemp strain that is rich in CBD. Most established producers will have cultivated different strains of the plant that will bring a unique properties to their specific product.
Most growers who cultivate high CBD strains will be aware of the synchronicity of cannabinoids such as CBG and other terpenes and will aim to highlight and blend the various cannabinoids for a full spectrum CBD oil that has different effects.
Growers and producers of cannabis oils have, over time, developed different methods for extracting oils from the plant - some more successful than others. As it stands, the CO2 extraction method is the most successful and highest regarded method of extracting CBD from cannabis.
This method uses temperature and pressure to produce a full spectrum, highly concentrated, totally pure extract that is more easily digested by the body.
It involves using pressurised carbon dioxide to draw out the cannabinoids from the plant. The process starts by turning CO2 into a liquid by cooling and pressurising it. The next step involves raising the temperature and pressure of the liquid gradually until it becomes ‘supercritical’, at a point between a liquid and a gas.
This supercritical CO2 solution is what is passed through the cannabis plant, extracting the oils that are desired for the final product, before being condensed back into a liquid state.
Ethanol can also be used to extract CBD due to its qualities as a solvent. However, the final product will likely be of a lower quality than CO2 extracted oil, as the process can remove some cannabinoids.
Following extraction comes the purifying process, which is usually done through a method called winterisation. This involves soaking CBD extract in alcohol before freezing it to separate it into waxes, lipids, and solvents. This increases concentration but can remove terpenes.
